A truly iconic West Coast beach shot. Many thanks to the Punakaiki Resort. Updates every 10 minutes.
Punakaiki is the site of one of the many 'must see' natural attractions on the West Coast of the South Island. Just beyond the township itself lies Dolomite Point, famous for the unusual rock formations known as the Pancake Rocks. Created by pressure and erosion, the rocks form spectacular towers and crevices. At high tide, the sea creates a second spectacle as the waves are forced up through blowholes in the rock. Tracks and stairways have been cut into the rocks to allow visitors to get right in amongst the landscape.
