The town is famous because of its popular hot springs, discovered in the 19th century. Hanmer Springs has a local resident population of 663.(2001)

There are two skifields close by, Hanmer Springs and Mount Lyford skifields.

Hanmer Springs is one of the top tourist destinations in New Zealand, and the population grows dramatically during holidays. Hanmer Springs has a steady stream of tourists throughout the year. You can chose from a variety of adventure activities such as mountain biking, jet boating at Thrillseekers or Bungy Jumping and much more!

Visitor Information can be found next to the hot springs. Information for Trampers can be obtained from the Department of Conservation.

There is a daily shuttle bus between Hanmer Springs and Christchurch. The information centre can also book transportation for visitors to the beautiful St James Walkway, located near the Lewis Pass.

Hanmer Springs is the gateway to Lake Tennyson and the Molesworth and Rainbow stations.
During summer it is possible to drive through the beautiful Rainbow Valley to St Arnaud - though 4 wheel drive vehicles are recommended. Guided tours are available.
